#bigstitchquilting
Love them both, but for different features.I like the green border, the feathers and the puffiness.I like the machine quilting on the dot quilt, and the big stitch circles added an awesome finish to it. Beautifully done.
Thank you Ann❤️have a great upcoming weekend ❤️
I love both of them … but the green border is my fav! Love hand quilting ❤
Do we really think all our ancestors gave even half a thought about acid in spit when they made all their quilts?? Or did any sewing? 😂 I know I never have. Adorable quilts!
I agree! Well said...LOL😂
So true!
Tracy, I lov e, love, love the big stitch quilting mixed with the machine quilting!!! AWESOMENESS. Great video!
Thanks Di...I think I'm addicted to BIG Stitch Quilting now LOL🤣
Great pattern for an I-spy car quilt or add more blocks and make a picnic blanket!
I call it the zen of hand sewing.
Tracy. If you would come up with your needle where there is a seam when starting a thread it will give you more of an attachment to bury your thread in. I’m an old hand quilted with quilting thread. Never tried floss
But I make the old tiny stitches as my Gramma taught me. Have fun
Quilting is the best part of the process. I love to hand quilt
Thanks Peggy for the hand quilting tip✅
You really are making life very difficult for yourself using floss. It breaks far too easily. Perl 8 cotton is designed for hand quilting, glides through the fabric like butter, very rarely snags and is a lot stronger and more durable for hand quilting. You can use Perl 12 too but I find it more prone to snagging nd easier to break.
@dianeshelton9592 yes. I ordered some✅
I love both quilts I would pick the green border as my fav out of the two quilts. As far as the hand versus machine, I would go hand in a smaller size quilt. It’s relaxing for me to keep my hands busy in the evening. Gets me out of my head into my hands, (Kate from the #lasthomelyhouse) says this all the time and I so agree with that saying.
Thanks for sharing Tracy, all you videos I learn something new and I want to make the latest and greatest quilt!!
Have a great relaxing weekend!❤❤
I have been doing Big Stitch quilting for a while now. I usually use #12 pearl cotton. I make a quilter's knot at the beginning and pop my knot through. I also knot it about ¼-½ inch above the fabric, make my final stitch but only into the batting and pop the knot through and bury the end. Then I rub the thread into the batting to kind of anchor it.
I really like the big stitch quilting. You’re not quilting the whole quilt just giving it more definition and interest. It’s something I would definitely try. Great idea!
I am going to try big stitch quilting with machine quilting. Good teacher.
I love to hand sew. It just relaxes me too!
Both quilts are beautiful. I got a charm pack here, so I will make this and part hand quilt and machine quilt the border. Thank you for this tutorial.
Love this idea for 5" squares. I have 2 containers of them so I think there are some car quilts in the future.. I like the idea of adding hand quilting to a machine quilted piece. Great ideas. Thanks for sharing!!
Great, great video Tracy. You never disappoint. I love both of the quilts and the combination of machine and hand quilting is both beautiful and rewarding. Great job!💗💚
thank you so very much Tracy for answering !!! you're the best..!!! xoxo
Could you just do a disappearing nine patch with the focus fabric in the corner?
Hand sewing? Avoid like the plague. I'm neither patient nor skilled enough. Machine bind. Machine quilt.
I like the look of hand quilting but unfortunately my hands won’t allow me to hand sew. Hence the reason I have a long arm. 😜 tendons just don’t cooperate in the sand box anymore. Both of your quilts are awesome with different feels. Love your FMQ with the feathers and curly swirls…but I also love the hand sewn quilt because it just feels so “homemade” and classic. 🥰🥰
The difference between "regular" handquilting and "big stitch" is the size of the needle. Regular ir "small" stitch quilting you would use a between needle, i use a size 9, and a strand of a 30-40wt thread and the "rocking" motion happens with your first 2 fingers and your thumb. A thimble is also used. It takes time to learn but well worth it. I haven't done the "big stitch" yet mainly because I learned the small stitch. My mom would probably come back to life if I did😮🪡🧵
I just watched your Cathedral Window Quilt video from 3 years ago. I think I can actually make one now, and I have watched a lot of videos…lol. Thank you so much 😊
Your hand stitching reminds me of what Kate does on The Last Homely House, she hand quilts ALL her quilts but does through all the layers.
Tracy did through all the layers as well
I have tried so many of the heat erase pens and I love the concept But, everyone I have tried left the ghost effect on my fabric which just runs all my work, I use painters tape for the most part. Being 75 now needle work just isn’t a possibility for me but wish I could. Really enjoying your channel !❤
I actually love big stitch quilting which I never would done had I decided not to wrestle the fabrics through the sewing machine any more! I've never had a large arm machine and if I would have thought to buy the Juki I really want 10 years ago (I'm 78), well.... But now I have big stitched going on two quilts and my stitches are larger than yours, however I love the look of them. I tried quilt as you go and I'm not a fan of that either. I am almost finished on a low volume gray herringbone for my daughter and will be doing quilting on another for my oldest son. I also hand stitched a quilt in 1995 and swore I would never do that again. Big stitch is much more fun. I also have had a hard time with the knot and I'm still not sure that the back stitch will hold. I use #10 crochet thread although I have tons of embroidery thread from my serious cross-stitch days. Anyway, love your channel and I may try the other thread and your back stitch soon!
Hi! Catching up in some videos. The green border I believe is Fossil Fern?? Cute pattern and a great quilt for the car! Thanks 👍
What kind of iron are you using? Sorry , I asked too quick. I found the link
The only hand I sewing I've done on quilts are the bindings and I LOVE hand sewing the bindings. I find it very relaxing. And since I fairly new at quilting, I've not made that many quilts and I'm not totally proficient in my sewing machine free quilting or my long arm quilting. I think hand sewing could be my favorite. As far as your quilts in this program, I'm like you, I couldn't pick one of your quilts over the other. I loved them both. Love watching you!
Thanks for all the fun ideas! Ive been hand quilting my quilts off and on for years. My stitches are usually larger than most. I call my style "rustic". I will definatly use your different sized circles idea one of these days.
The circles were easier to quilt than I thought they would be too!
I love both ways great tutorial thank you🥰
After thinking about this overnight (while remembering the quilt I did quilt by hand about 46 years ago), I remembered that my back, arms, neck, head, and eyes did not hurt during (and after) hand quilting. I was very comfortable quilting on that big, wooden, oval hoop (I still have it) that fit perfectly over the arms of my old bent wood rocking chair (which I don't have anymore). However, my hands did hurt during the process. It took a lot longer to quit by hand (because of pain in my hands and fingers). Arthritic must have been setting up in my hands then (it is very apparent now). I also remember the biggest advantage to hand quilting was that I could quilt in any design that I wanted to. Maybe I should give this big stitch hand quilting method a good try. I just might love it.
Thanks for sharing your hand stitching journey Arvetta. Big Stitch Quilting uses a larger needle and the hand movements are bigger so you may feel more comfortable. I do feel a bit of a new cramp in my non dominant thumb though-It's from squeezing the back fabric like an oven mitt. It's weird because I would think my right hand with the needle would get the cramp...🤷🏻♀️
Yes! I like getting away from the sewing machine. I used to use a hoop, but if it's well- basted, I just lay it on a foldable table and move it around as needed to quilt that section. No little ones around anymore to be touching it with sticky fingers,...so it can sit out for awhile. If needed, I can fold it up and set it out of the way. Because of arthritis I take more breaks, and I am NOT fussy about "even" stitches. No quilt police here! 😊
Oh I love this. Thank you. I have to do this!!
Tracy, loved this video. Both quilts are great, think the green is my pick for favorite. Thank you for Congo show us so many of your creative ideas. Looking forward to making at least one of these. Also, with maybe just one border will make great wheelchair quilt too.
Yes! will make a perfect wheelchair quilt!❤️
I’m fussy, too about pieces not touching - so it’s OK😁😁😁. I have recently discovered many plastics if fabrics separated to kind - charms, fat quarters, layer cakes, etc. - forgot all about them - I, so embarrassed thst I just need to keep on purchasing these so I don’t run out!!!😬😬
Your such a great teacher I look forward to trying this technique
Loved the green one but loved the hand .stitched one. Both win forme
My machine has been out of action for a while so I have been doing a lot of hand stitching. In fact I’ve started piecing by hand. So far this year I have completed 15 aprons, a place mat (with appliqué), 10 appliquéd and bordered blocks for a Christmas quilt and am currently working on a quilt and three tote bags. It is indeed relaxing, plus I find accuracy so much easier to achieve. I do, however, backstitch all my seams, no running stitch. From the front you can’t tell the difference between the hand stitching and machine stitching (approximately 12 stitches per inch). Love the look of hand quilting, but as my first reaction to any quilt is colour, I must go for the green/aqua one. (It’s not Stonehenge).
Wow ...way to go with all the hand quilting✅
Love the colours
There are needles you can buy I think from Britain they have a ball towards the end and that helps with the down and up
I think Emma Jones vintage hand sewing uses them
I’m not sure the name of her channel on you tube
Definitely love both ways
Yes! I ordered them a week ago! And I haven’t received them yet. So excited to get them❤️
Then there will b no stopping you
❤ your quilting
I like both quilts. The fabric and patterns looks fun. I'm working on a cross stitch project, licking my thread thru the needle. Then I heard you say we're not supposed to fo that. 🤣. Regular hand quilting is smaller stitch.
I think we all lick our thread though...lol including me LOL😂
Traditional quilting stitches are way smaller - like 8 or so to the inch. Big stitch is only 3-4 per inch. I've done both. But I've done a lot more big stitch. It's easier...
Thank you for the info...that makes total sense✅
I wonder the reasoning behind both spray basting AND pin basting????
The pins are added insurance✅
Thanks, Tracy! The picture that you provided was my guide at the beginning. I really appreciate your carefully orchestrated (with much personality!!) tutorial. I am almost finished with the top and am ready to go on. I have watched your tutorial on free motion a couple of times and I have all of the thread, presser foot, etc., required. I just have to find the courage to do it! I think that I will practice on a couple of scrap pieces first so that I won’t ruin my sandwich top. Again, thanks a million for the tutorial. Pat Berne
Pat...YOU can do it my sewing friend!!!!❤️
I can't even decide which I like best. I really like the fmq on the green one and wish I could do it. I just have a brother that you can switch some things around and try it. Too many issues. I love that polkadot border and the hand stitching is such a nice touch! Personalized! Do you like the weight and feel of the high loft batting? I feel like all quilts when I was a kid were made with that type.??
I think I like the drape of the lower loft batting❤️
Get Tracy! You need a needle minder. Sure helps with keeping track of your needle at all times. ☑️
LOL I have one....but who knows where that is? LOL🤣
I love both of the quilts, and the big stitch quilting is so fun! I think the green border really sets that one off. I also love hand sewing. I am doing some big stitch quilting on a small table topper that I used a cross stitch piece I made for the center and then I added some French General fabric strips to make some borders around the center piece. So fun!!
Your table runner sounds lovely❤️
Watch out for poly batting if you buy from JoAnns Fabrics, I ran out and went for more of the same # and it was much thinner.
Yep...that what happened to me✅
Love the hand stitch! What would happen if you used an embroidery hoop? Would that make it a bit easier for you?
Not sure...but I think it may make it harder🤷🏻♀️
I love the charm fabric!! please does anyone know whose it is??
"just my type" by patty young✅
I like the green border more.
So no knot at the beginning and end? Does using only a back stitch hold the threads in when laundered and used by the child? I hate burying knots so if the backstitch holds that may be my new method.
I watched a video of a veteran hand sewer and she only backstitches and does not knot ....since I'm new at....I went with it. So far so good. I washed the quilts yesterday and checked every single hand sewn thread and all was well🤷🏻♀️
Both my favorite
I love the green car quilt. Very nice!
love the polka dots
Your stitches look great. Circles are not easy to hand stitch.
Thank you! 😊
Love them both 🎉🎉❤
Your stitches are more like a running stitch. Quilting stitches are smaller 😉 looks nice 👍🏼 the green boarder quilt is my favorite 🥰 I love hand quilting ❤
Rubbish, some quilting stitches are smaller. But no one , absolutely no one can say what size stitches are “ supposed “ to be used to hand quilt. There are no quilt police.
Traditional quilting stitches are smaller stitches but she is doing “big stitch quilting” and the stitches are a bit larger than traditional hand quilting. It looks great Tracy!
@@wendyprejean5566 on the other hand she is quilting with stitches and since there are no quilting police, she is quilting. Full stop .
@@dianeshelton9592 you are very rude and snippy in your remarks.
Both ladies can have their opinions, they weren’t being derogatory.
You must have missed in the video where she asked for opinions on her quilting.
@@dianeshelton9592 Ibelieve you probably misunderstood me. I was simply stating that Tracy said she was big stitch quilting rather than the traditional quilting with small stitches. I love both and use both in quilting and I commented that her quilt looked great.😊
Did you machine quilt on the big stitch one at all or is that is what holds it together?
I stitched in the ditch on all the seams of polka dot one and then I Big Stitched the circles✅
I love them both
I really like the green border
Love them both.
Hand quilting is something I have just started doing - it gives a handcrafted look snd feel. Your machine FMQ is wonderful too.
I like the green border. Your hand quilting is inspiring ✨️. I asked you about your design wall and since then I just taped flannel to my wall. I'm enjoying so very much...making it bigger is the next plan.
Wonderful!
Both are pretty. Yes I do love the hand stitching like u do. Have done it 4 yrs b4 I knew that's what it was called. Luv to watch TV while either hand stitching or crocheting. Still haven't learned how to knit at age 81. A little slow I guess. Tried it and just couldn't get it straight in my mind. Lol. Keep up the ideas please.
Love both quilts but leaning towards the polka dot. Love polka dot fabric. All my first quilts in the 80’s I hand quilted until I took the plunge of machine quilting. I want to try this larger stitch hand quilting and love the idea of doing both kinds in a quilt! Thanks for all your inspiration
Tracy, thank you so much as always. I especially appreciate you slowing down for the binding hack and filming it so well. I get mine so twisted or sew the diagonal in the wrong direction. I find a hundred ways to mess up :). Love both of them.
This looks like the Disappearing Nine -Patch but with the charms cut in a different way - I really like this and what fun to figure out where each piece needs to go!!! I’d go and cut up some layer cakes for this, too! Yes! I have way too much fabric🫣🫣🫣
Tracy, you are getting better at this. I watched your first time, and your stitches flow is great. I've done even larger stitches, just as long as they are fairly even. Both quilts are darling, I really like the green 💚 border best. I still have some of the green and gray prints that came from your Mom's stash. When I get it finished I'll try and remember to send a photo. Lol ❤
Hi Tracy. Thanks SO much for this!!! I make charity quilts and this idea will be one of my "go to" patterns. Your videos are so easy to understand and a pleasure every time. Hugs from Canada.
You are so welcome!❤️ Thank you for watching❤️
Love the circles with the lines :) very cute. Also, the pattern is great, you can make a small or a big quilt easily with charm packs.
Love the polka dot!
Oh love the big stitching. This is a great idea. I am definitely trying this!! Thank you for a great idea and video!❤❤❤❤
I ❤❤❤ both Tracy. Great car quilts. Thanks for sharing. ❤❤❤
I have always buried a knot at the beginning and end of a hand quilting section. But the larger thread might make a hole when a big knot is pulled through. So this way might be better. 😊
Where did you get the great design curtain behind you? It holds everything so well! Please let us know where we can get one.
It's just a piece of white flannel✅
Thank you. I love your channel. Your videos are so informative and pleasant. You make it look so easy and that has inspired me to start quilting. Ok, enough talking already. 😂
My mom liked using polyester batting years ago and I double up on it because it’s thin.
I’ve been enjoying my dmc floss also. I don’t live near a Joann’s or quilt shop but there used to be a Michael’s craft store. I order online and they can be delivered or U pick it up. I didn’t know they sell a lot of fabric online too ! Lol
I’ve just started big stitch quilting and love it too! Great tutorial. Thank you 😊
I did big quilting on my granddaughters quilt circles all over it, beautiful!
Love both quilts. I love the big stitches and the feathers! I can meander and do loopy loops with free motion on my hoop frame but not feathers. Yours are beautiful!
I like them both, and love the look of both...I have been thinking of Hand Tying a larger quilt...would love a video on the different ways to hand tie a quilt...there is one way where you travel inbetween the layers to get to the next 'junction point' to tie, and the other is to tie off at each point...would love your take on it, and what floss you use, etc...
Handsewing you can Do when you doen't habe a swing maschin with you.😊
I love them both Tracy. You have come so far since you first started your channel ( I am a watcher from the beginning) and I love your enthusiasm. Where do you live in Ohio?
❤️❤️❤️Wow Joyce...thank you so much for the kind words and especially for supporting my channel from the beginning❤️❤️❤️
Ps...I live in northeast Ohio✅
@@TheSewingChannel When I saw you lived in Ohio I thought we might live close but I live in N. Kentucky close to Cincinnati. So sad.....
I❤ both they are both puffy and have a different border and hand or machine quilting
I think I would have made a 9 patch and cut it up instead of cutting the small pieces. No worries you do you!
Flannel for the win. The more you wash it the softer it gets. Great quilts.
I usually just hide a loop of the thread in the nearest seam, as well as burrying the tail.
when I first started use the heat pen I showed my grandkids I would write something on the squares let the kids iron it and ironed off so they went in the freezer and watch it come back
❤️❤️❤️
Hint: fold your thread over the sharp end of the needle, then the golf will easily go through the eye, then you don’t need to wet end.
❤❤❤
Both are beautiful I can’t pick a favorite 😍
I was thinking the flannel would be great for the quilts! Great minds think alike!
Right❣️
I didn't think I could mix a flannel on the back and straight regular cotton on the front. Thank you! I guess people do that with the Minky fabric as well. Sounds so comfy!! I do preshrink all my fabric, so that should even out any shrinkage differences. Yay!
Green one
Love the circle hand stitch pattern, such a clever lady ❤
I like the machine quilting bet; because, it will last a lot longer.
The green border..❤ enjoying the replay ❤
Goodmorning Tracy! I love the one with the green border. Red is my least favorite color.
I know, most women love red. I think it's because I'm a redhead.
My daughter doesnt l like red either. A little bits okay, ...weird I know.
I'm impressed with your quilting! You're so industrious! Beautiful work Tracy! Blessings!
Ps. I agree: hand sewing is very relaxing and therapeutic! I love to crossstitch also for that reason!
I love the quilting on both! The feathers on the green are stunning!
Thank you for the kind feedback Sharon❤️
just found the fabric but its sold out :((
I figured as much....so sorry...
@@TheSewingChannel I wanted to send you a coffee but It was a little confusing??
My hand sewing is restricted to hems, alterations to my handknits, putting hems on handwoven towels, and once in a great while I sew crocheted motifs together instead of crocheting them together. I enjoy it but I am S L O W. I crochet and knit quickly which helps. I’m slow at weaving but love it.
I like both car quilts! I do not FMQ yet; I’m working my way through Walk and Walk 2.0. Learning lots! I might try the Big Stitch Hand Quilting but not soon. I’ve seen some hand quilted quilts with stitches so precise you’d swear they are machine made. Stunning work done decades ago with limited light. I cannot imagine! I’d not be able to sew without my LED light strips added to my machines.
Have a good one, Tracy! Enjoyed this video as my “need to relax then turn off the screens for the night” selection. Today was my 60th birthday. My plans fell through so I was on my own. I made the most of it! Take care :)
🎊🎈Awe...well Happy Birthday to you my sewing friend!!!!🎂 Thanks for spending it with me❤️
I don't hand quilt. Both are cute!
Tracy, thank you for so much good stuff in this video! I am going to save it and give it the thumbs up. Have you ever used a smallish frame for big stitch quilting? I wonder if it would make things easier. I did some straight stitching and hand tying on my last quilt and had to do many ties over because I did not get through the back layer. Favorite? Maybe the polkadot one as it is so cute with the fun fabrics, but green is my favorite color. Both win for the quilting. LOOK AT YOU GO with the feathers and loops! I have to try again. I used to get angles instead of loops, but did some very nice freehand cursive writing. Maybe I will try it by making cat quilts from very worn denim skirts.
No, I haven’t tried to frame yet… But I’m still looking into it and I’m still new at this lol 😂
i love the green one but i do love the hand sew quilting
Love the quilt pattern! Now as far as the hand big stitch quilting vs the machine quilting, don’t make me pick. I can’t, I weird…..okay so you knew that, lol
But It all depends on my mood. Really, sometimes I just want to sit and hand quilt, especially if I am a passenger on a long road trip.
All the wonderful choices. I started hand quilting when I was little with my grandmother’s Quilting Bee’s.
My mom machine quilted so I had the best of both worlds. I absolutely love making needle books. I starting my big sticking love fest with those. It was addictive.
Love the car quilts! So do my grandkids in the back seat.
Great tutorial Tracy!
That’s awesome that you started hand sewing so early. I always despised it until I tried big stitch!!! And now I’m hooked!
